Whether you are a runner, an athlete, or a person who just wants to enjoy being active, orthotics can help improve your balance, redistribute your weight, relieve the pressure on your joints, improve the efficiency of your step and absorb the shock of your movement.
Orthotics are custom made shoe inserts. You may need orthotics if:
· You notice the sole on one side of your shoe wears more than the other
· Your feet hurt after being active
· You experience ankle sprains frequently
· You have chronic pain in your lower back, knee or heels
· You have unusually high arches
· You have flat feet
· You have tendonitis, shin splints, hammer toes
· Your legs are consistently tired or aching
Incorrect foot placement can affect your posture and stress your knee and hip joints. Orthotics are designed to provide a comfortable stride, they correct abnormal foot position as you stand, walk or run making your gait biomechanically balanced and efficient. Orthotics can be ordered by your physiotherapist after they complete an examination of your feet, your gait, and analyze any pain you may be experiencing. Issues resulting from heel pain, plantar fasciitis, flat feet, high arches, abnormal biomechanics, or poor lower limb alignment can all be addressed with custom designed orthotics, which can be made to cushion sore areas and correct abnormalities. They can also be very helpful for athletes, especially runners who have recurring problems with their feet
If you notice these conditions and are experiencing discomfort, speak to one of our physiotherapists. And because there’s no such thing as an “average foot”, your physiotherapist will arrange your custom orthotics to address your foot or ankle pain and help relieve stress on your knees, hips and back.
