Balancing Act

Have you ever noticed that when you close your eyes while standing, you tend to sway more? What about your ability to maintain your balance when you stand on one leg with your eyes closed compared to when your eyes are open?

We rely heavily on our eyes to tell us where our body and head are in relation to the world around us. However, when we eliminate vision by closing our eyes, the brain has to rely on the input from the other balance systems. If there are any deficits in the other areas then balance will be off!

The many systems of the body that influence balance are:

  • the visual system
  • muscles strength
  • sensory input from tendons
  • joints (proprioceptive input)
  • the inner ear (vestibular system).

Inquire with one of our physiotherapists to provide you with the right exercises to improve your balancing act…
